Gugu Mbatha-Raw has joined the cast of Ava DuVernay’s film adaptation of “A Wrinkle In Time,” which is set up at Disney.
DuVernay is directing from a script penned by “Frozen” writer and co-director Jennifer Lee.
The science/fantasy novel, first published in 1963, revolves around a young girl whose father, a government scientist, has gone missing after working on a mysterious project called a tesseract. Three celestial beings guide her, her brother, and her friend to space in order to find him.
Mbatha-Raw joins a cast that already includes Oprah Winfrey (as Mrs. Which), Reese Witherspoon (as Mrs. Whatsit), Mindy Kaling (as Mrs. Who), and rising star Storm Reid who is toplining the studio’s take on Madeleine L’Engle’s children’s book, as the young girl.
Mbatha-Raw has signed up to play her mother. The search for the actor who will play her father is still underway.
“A Wrinkle in Time” is the first in a series of novels by author Madeleine L’Engle, so this could be just the first of a multi-film franchise. If you’ve read the novel(s), I’d love to read your reactions. I picked up a copy of “A Wrinkle in Time” after it was announced that DuVernay would direct it, but my to-read stack of books is tall, and I haven’t gotten to it yet. But I’m sure I will before the film becomes a reality. If you’d like to own a copy, click here.
Jim Whitaker and Catherine Hand are producing the film, which will begin production later this year.
