Harriet and other films relating the Black American experience will be a part of a new art exhibition, Afrocosmologies: American Reflections, at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art in Hartford, CT.
The exhibition will run from October 19 through January 20 and will feature artists exploring the art that details the African American experience from the 1800s and beyond.
“Alongside artists of the late-nineteenth century, contemporary artists define new ideas about spirituality, identity, and the environment in ways that move beyond traditional narratives of Black Christianity,” states the museum. “In dialogue, these works acknowledge a continuing body of beliefs–a cosmology–that incorporates the centrality of nature, ritual, and relationships between the human and the divine. Emerging from the rich religious and aesthetic traditions of West Africa and the Americas, these works present a dynamic cosmos of influences that shape Contemporary art.”
According to the website, artists that will be featured in the exhibition include Romare Bearden, Dawoud Bey, Elizabeth Catlett, Willie Cole, Melvin Edwards, Titus Kaphar, Louis Mailou Jones, Kerry James Marshall, Alison Saar, Hale Woodruff Shinique Smith and Kehinde Wiley.
Films that will be screened during the exhibition include not just Harriet, but Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am and If Beale Street Could Talk. The full screening schedule is below (all times Eastern):
