More than likely, if you’ve seen Eddie Murphy’s 1988 comedy Coming to America, you’ve wanted to eat at least one burger and fries meal at McDowell’s. The McDonald’s knock-off run by Cleo McDowell (John Amos) became a classic pop culture icon, and this Halloween, folks in the Los Angeles area can partake in the fantasy by visiting sandwich restaurant Fat Sal’s, which has outfitted itself in a McDowell’s pop-up.
Recreating McDowell’s isn’t the only thing Fat Sal’s did. The restaurant also recreated the My-T-Sharp Barbershop, where Prince Akeem (Murphy) went to get his hair touched up by crotchety barber Clarence (Murphy). The restaurant has also tricked out its Twitter page, turning it into an online McDowell’s destination.

According to Secret LA, the restaurant will feature the McDowell’s Big Mick (its version of the Big Mac). The differences between the Big Mick and Fat Sal’s version is that it’s on hoagie bread and, as The Daily Meal shows, is stuffed with french fries.
The restaurant will have other Coming to America-themed treats like Zamunda Fries, a decadent dish of fries topped with blackened chicken, cheddar and mozzarella cheeses, roasted peppers, sauteed onions and habanero aioli, and the Sexual Chocolate shake. The shake, based on the ridiculous band fronted by Randy Watson (Murphy), features a chocolate milkshake topped with chocolate syrup, cherries, chocolate sprinkles, shaved chocolate and a piece of rich chocolate cake. The cup comes complete with an image of Randy Watson’s face on the front.
If you are in the LA area and can’t get to the restaurant, Postmates will serve as the Fat Sal’s official delivery service. With McDowell’s at your fingertips, you can easily plan an impromptu Coming to America Halloween get-together complete with McDowell’s fast food.
This isn’t the first time Fat Sal’s has dressed up as McDowell’s. As the Sacramento Bee posted last year, the restaurant donned its costume back in 2017, treating its customers to some delicious Halloween fun. Several celebrities stopped by the restaurant including Shari Headley, who played Cleo’s daughter and Prince Akeem’s (Murphy) future wife Lisa McDowell.
This year, the celebrity guests include rapper Fabolous, who wore a McDowell’s uniform and held a mop, just like Akeem did in the movie.
