The Black Mirror creator says life is too dark right now to create more disturbing sci-fi material.
When asked by Radio Times about a sixth season of the Netflix anthology series, Brooker explained why now is not the time for Black Mirror.
“I’ve been busy doing thing,” he said according to IndieWire. “I don’t know what I can say about what I’m doing and not doing. At the moment, I don’t know what stomach there would be for stories about societies falling apart, so I’m not working away on any of those [episodes]. I’m sort of keen to revisit my comic skill set, so I’ve been writing scripts aimed at making myself laugh.”
Indeed, the series, which explores the dystopian reaches of speculative science fiction, might not be what’s on brand for the time of the coronavirus. But regardless, the series has provided sci-fi fans with works that also explores facets of humanity, such as the well-received “San Junipero” episode starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Mackenzie Davis and “Striking Vipers” starring Yahya Abdul Mateen II, Anthony Mackie and Nicole Beharie.
