Actor Nelsen Ellis, most known for his award-winning role of Lafayette Reynolds on HBO’s True Blood has died at the age of 39.

In a statement, the network said, “We were extremely saddened to hear of the passing of Nelsan Ellis. Nelsan was a long-time member of the HBO family whose groundbreaking portrayal of Lafayette will be remembered fondly within the overall legacy of ‘True Blood.’ Nelsan will be dearly missed by his fans and all of us at HBO.”
Ellis was also known for a flurry of other roles in movies like The Help, The Butler and Get On Up. He also had a lead role on CBS’ Sherlock procedural, Elementary.

Ellis is survived by relatives including his father, his grandmother his son and seven siblings.
