Icarus Films has announced the acquisition of all North American rights to Dieudo Hamadi’s new feature documentary, “Mama Colonel.”

Winner of the Grand Prize at Cinéma du Réel, as well of both the Jury Prize and the Best Forum Film Tagesspiegel Award at the 2017 Berlinale Film Festival, “Mama Colonel” made its North American premiere at the HotDocs Film Festival. Its U.S. Premiere will take place on June 15, 2017, at the AFI Docs Film Festival, with director Dieudo Hamadi attending in person.

Colonel Honorine Manyole, commonly known as “Mama Colonel,” runs a Congolese police unit for the protection of minors and the fight against sexual violence. After 15 years in the eastern city of Bukavu, she is transferred to Kisangani where she finds herself faced with new challenges. In his sensitively crafted portrait of one extraordinarily brave and tenacious woman, director Dieudo Hamadi sheds new light on the struggle to protect women and children from violence and the complex ramifications of his country’s war-torn past.
