Production has been suspended on the sixth and final season of Netflix’s House of Cards amid the Kevin Spacey sexual assault scandal.
Deadline reports that Netflix and producer Media Rights Capital told them: “MRC and Netflix have decided to suspend production on House of Cards season six, until further notice, to give us time to review the current situation and to address any concerns of our cast and crew.”
This comes after Monday’s news that show would end next year for its sixth season, and just before that, actor Anthony Rapp accused Spacey of sexual assault when he was 14-years-old in 1986.
Production on the sixth season had already begun prior to this all.
In another statement yesterday about the Spacey allegations, the two companies said, “Media Rights Capital and Netflix are deeply troubled by last night’s news concerning Kevin Spacey.”
House of Cards, considered to be one of the biggest moments in the careers of Spacey and Robin Wright (also increased the visibility of Mahershala Ali in mainstream entertainment) was Netflix’s first major original series production, setting the stage for what we know now to be the game-changing streaming giant.
Hollywood has seen a “floodgate” of accusations, with victims coming forward speaking about their stories after the Harvey Weinstein debacle.
