The cast of House of the Dragon is already hinting at major character developments in Season 3.
During a cast interview with Blavity’s Shadow and Act, the stars shared insight into where viewers will find Targaryen factions of The Blacks and The Greens when the hit HBO series returns.
From shifting political power to personal reckonings and difficult lessons ahead, the next chapter of the Targaryen civil war will push each character into new territory.
According to Emma D’Arcy, Season 3 finds Rhaenyra operating with a renewed sense of confidence after the events of Season 2.
D’Arcy explained that Rhaenyra’s evolving relationship with Mysaria and their unconventional approach to strategy procuded tangible results, helping strengthen her position as the war continues.
“I think we started to see it toward the end of Season 2,” D’Arcy said. “I think her and Mysaria come up with… It’s almost a sort of lateral thinking, alt approach to military strategy that starts to proffer results.”
The actor added that Rhaenyra has largely lost faith in her council, whose efforts have often centered on limiting her actions rather than advancing her goals. For the first time, however, Rhaenyra appears to feel that victory is within reach.
“I think for the first time, there is a momentum in Rhaenyra’s campaign and her goal,” D’Arcy said.
Matt Smith suggested that Daemon enters Season 3 with a completely different outlook following the revelations and experiences he endured previously. Smith described Daemon’s transformation as almost spiritual, saying the character has gained clarity about both the larger conflict and his personal relationships.
“He’s had a visitation from an archangel and he’s been repurposed,” Smith said. That shift, according to Smith, influences how Daemon views the war as well as his family.
“It’s given him a renewed clarity on both a more macro kind of war sense and also on a domestic sense,” Smith said. “Perhaps I need to reconnect with my daughters.” The actor described Daemon’s new path in simple terms.
“I think all of those experiences have hopefully led him towards being a pure warrior really.”
Bethany Antonia teased a challenging season ahead for Baela, whose levelheaded perspective could become increasingly important as tensions escalate.
Antonia said much of her portrayal is influenced by Baela’s upbringing under both House Targaryen and House Velaryon, as well as the guidance she received from her grandparents and Princess Rhaenys.
“I think she’s really levelheaded and I think so much of that comes from her grandmother’s influence,” Antonia said.
Because of that background, Baela often views situations differently than those around her and questions decisions that seem reckless or shortsighted.
“When they’re suggesting these crazy things, she’s like, ‘Huh? You want to go where? Why?'” Antonia said.
Despite her instincts, Baela often feels ignored by those making key decisions. Antonia hinted that Season 3 will explore the consequences of overlooking those warnings.
“I think this season we’re going to see the results of that and what happens when you don’t listen to your gut instinct,” she said. “I think she’s going to have a really harsh lesson to learn.”
