In April, Shadow and Act reported that emerging actors Jorge Lendeborg Jr. and Tosin Cole had been cast in the upcoming House Party reboot from New Line Cinema and LeBron James’ SpringHill Entertainment. 

Now, in an exclusive report from Variety, word has arrived that actress Karen Obilom has joined the cast of the reboot as well. Obilom, who is known for her roles in Doom Patrol and Games People Play, will portray the female lead in the movie.

The script for the House Party reboot will be written by FX’s Atlanta writing duo Stephen Glover and Jamal Olori. Music video director Calmatic will helm the film in the feature-film directorial debut. LeBron James and Maverick Carter are producing for SpringHill. The original film’s director, Reginald Hudlin, will be executive producing alongside  Warrington Hudlin, Spencer Beighley and Jamal Henderson.

The original House Party, which was directed by Reginald Hudlin, starred Christopher “Kid” Reid, Christopher “Play” Martin and Tisha Campbell-Martin. Rebased in 1990, the film was a surprise box office success, grossing over $25 million.

The success of House Party would spawn four sequels, House Party 2, House Party 3, House Party 4: Down To The Last Minute, and House Party: Tonight’s The Night, which featured Boomerang star Tequan Richmond.

Obilom spoke to Shadow and Act in 2019 about Black people being centered more and more in on-screen narratives. “Whether it’s authentic or not, Black people are going to use [these opportunities] and they’re going to succeed and bring other people up with them,” she said. If we find an open door, we’re going to go through it. We’re going to crowd that door. At the end of the day, Hollywood’s a business and they’re going to make money, and Black people have dollars and they’re going to spend their money. I’m very surprised it took Hollywood this long to realize that.”
