There’s no shortage of star power in the box office juggernaut Hustlers, with a cast that includes Jennifer Lopez, Keke Palmer, Lizzo and Cardi B.
However, the film also contains an unexpected, yet memorable cameo. In an interview with IndieWire, director Lorene Scafaria revealed how she nabbed R&B superstar Usher for a cameo in the film.
Scafaria revealed that having Lopez, a fellow music icon in her own right, as part of the main ensemble played an integral role in securing an Usher cameo.
Although she hoped the R&B singer would make a cameo in the film, Scafaria was quite unsure what his decision would be.
“You just kind of wonder, who’s actually going to play this role,” she said. “I was so desperate for it to be him.”
As Hustlers is set during 2008, Scafaria revealed that the “Love In This Club” singer was concerned about his appearance in the film.
“He had some worries about whether or not he looked the same as he did in 2008, and I was like, ‘You do,’” she said. “But then he was concerned because his hair is different, so there was a day where I was Googling ‘Usher and hats’ and sending Usher pictures of himself in hats so he knew it was possible for him to step into the role. But then he really had fun with it and he brought his chain from that era, that jacket.”
Hustlers is in theaters now.
