Idris Elba is taking on numerous roles in front of and behind the camera for a now-untitled The Hunchback of Notre Dame film based at Netflix.
Elba will direct, produce, star in and create original music for the film.
The new adaptation is described as a “sonic and musical experience.”
Specific plot changes/details have not been released for the latest re-telling of the Victor Hugo literary classic, but the original story centers on a hunchback named Quasimodo who falls in love with a gypsy named Esmeralda.
Several television and film adaptations have taken place over the years, including the popular 1996 Disney animated film.
Elba’s feature directorial debut, Yardie, will have a film release in theaters later this year.
This expands his relationship with Netflix, where he is producing and starring in the comedy series Turn Up Charlie.
