At Mipcom, Issa Rae touched on all things Insecure!
Rae attended Mipcom where she was honored as Personality of the Year.
During the Q&A, moderator Iris Brey noted what seems to be the case for most shows with predominantly Black casts — most of their audience is white!
For Insecure, that total is 62 percent. “That threw me all the way the f**k off,” Rae said. “Which is great. It makes me want to go back in time and find that person (who said), ‘No one’s interested in watching these shows about people of color. Even white people are tired of seeing white-people shows.”
She gave major props to Shonda Rhimes during her Mipcom tall, as well. If you remember, Rae had a show in development through Shondaland called I Hate L.A. Dudes, but ABC passed on it. “She paved the way for so many of us. Scandal legitimized the online audience and the online voice in a completely different way. And so, yes, I definitely look to her for inspiration for just starting a movement.”
