Generation Z recently got a warm shoutout from Issa Rae, the creator behind hit shows like Insecure and Rap Sh!t.
Rae spoke on Gen-Z while attending the 15th annual Fashion Show & Style Awards, presented by Harlem’s Fashion Row (HFR), a creative agency that’s committed to “creating a bridge between brands and Designers of Color in fashion,” according to the organization’s website.
Rae was in attendance to receive the first-ever Virgil Abloh Award, which was presented by LVMH and awarded by Virgil Abloh’s widow, Shannon Abloh.
“It is a true honor to be even seen in line with his mission,” Rae said of the award, according to Girls United. “I know he was cut off way too soon. He had so much more to do, so to get that encouragement and that validation meant a lot.”
The outlet went on to ask Rae for her opinion on how younger generations are working to innovate the fashion world. She shared that she appreciates Gen-Z‘s energy and approach to the matter.
“Gen-Z has multiple platforms, they’re vocal, and they’re just uninhibited. They feel like, ‘The world is going to end anyway, so f**k it,’ and that energy is contagious,” she said.
In addition to Rae, fashion designer Misa Hylton was also at the HFR event, and Girls United got her thoughts on Gen-Z‘s impact on style.
“I think Gen-Z has changed what fashion and style is today because fashion and creativity is about bravery. Gen-Z leads with bravery, courage, hanging outside the box comfortably, and they represent the future of fashion and what’s to come, and I love it,” Hylton noted, according to Girls United.
She also shared some useful advice for the next wave of fashion designers, encouraging them to be authentic and always “persevere.”
“You need to believe in yourself, trust in your gift, trust the process, and know that every step matters whether it’s a step forward or a step back. It all matters. Stick to your guns, trust the process, and always keep moving forward,” Hylton continued.
“You can pause for a second, take a break, catch your breath, but always get back up and keep moving forward,” she added.
What do you think about Issa Rae and Misa Hylton’s kind words of encouragement for Gen-Z?
