Luther fans can get ready to see the grizzled detective inspector solve crimes on the big screen!
Variety reports that the UK series is getting the film treatment. Idris Elba, who stars as the eponymous detective, confirmed the news during the launch of the show’s fifth season in London, adding that the Luther creator Neil Cross, is writing the script.
“Neil is beavering away on writing this thing,” said Elba, according to Variety, “and I think the remit for the film is to scale it up.” He also said that since the show falls in line with films like Seven and Along Came a Spider, “I think what we could like to do is use that blueprint to create Luther the film.”
“It will be more murder, more Volvos, more frowning Luther…essentially we just want to try to take it to a much bigger audience and scale, and perhaps international as well,” he said.
For the fifth season, Luther teams up with D.S. Catherine Halliday (Wunmi Mosaku) to solve the murder mysteries that plague London. According to the season’s official description:
“As a series of monstrous killings becomes ever more audacious, Luther and new recruit Halliday are confounded by a tangle of leads and misdirection that seems designed to protect an unspeakable horror. But even as the case brings him closer than ever to the nature of true evil, a reluctant Luther must also face the ghosts of his own past. Striding back into the line of fire, he must choose who to protect… and who to sacrifice. Whatever his next move, it will have devastating consequences for those around him – and will change John Luther forever.”
Luther‘s next season premieres on BBC One in January. It will premiere in America later in 2019.
