Janelle Monae wants to play Storm in the MCU.
In a new interview with Empire, the singer-actress has been campaigning to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the weather goddess herself.
“I have definitely thrown it out there,” she said to the outlet. “One of my dreams has always been to play Storm. I don’t know if she comes in Black Panther, but it would be a dream to have her in it. I don’t know where they are with that. A lot of women have played Storm and they’ve done an exceptional job, and I would love to be in that line of artists and get to do Storm justice.”
Monae isn’t the only actress campaigning for the role; If Beale Street Could Talk‘s KiKi Layne has made her wish to play the character known, and the current Storm, Alexandra Shipp, was last seen in the final X-Men film before Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox, Dark Phoenix. Even though Shipp hasn’t been officially fired from her role because of the acquisition, fans believe that the merger puts her claim on the role in jeopardy.
Storm has been one of the Marvel characters fans have been protective of, hoping she’s given her just due in the MCU after being treated less-than-stellar in the ’90s and ’00s films featuring Halle Berry in the role. No mention of Storm’s presence has been linked to any news regarding Marvel’s Phase 4 films, but fans are still hoping that the character will become part of the MCU soon.
