Jeffrey Wright and Octavia Spencer are taking on the film adaptation of a stage classic.

Deadline reports that Clemency and Till director Chinonye Chukwu will helm the Focus Features and Amblin film adaptation of Death of a Salesman. Chukwu will also adapt the story for film with Pulitzer Prize-winning author Tony Kushner.

Wright, who is currently starring in Highest 2 Lowest, and Spencer will star as the leading roles of Willy Loman and his wife, Linda Loman, respectively.

The history of Death of a Salesman’

The play debuted in 1949 and tells the tragic story of a traveling salesman who tries to achieve the American Dream despite his failing career and equally troubled family life.

The play debuted at a time when many in America were experiencing disillusionment about the “American Dream” in a post-WWII society.

Spencer will produce with Kushner and Amblin Entertainment’s Cindy Tolan and Kristie Macosko Krieger.

‘Death of a Salesman’ was recently on Broadway

The play’s popularity has led it to being adapted for television several times. It’s also been repeatedly revived on Broadway and the West End, with the latest 2019 West End production and 2022 Broadway revival starring Wendell Pierce in the title role.
