Since John Witherspoon’s death in October, The Boondocks fans have wondered how the show’s reboot will move forward with Witherspoon’s beloved character, Grandad. Enter Jenifer Lewis, who has responded to hopeful fans asking for her to join the show.

Singer-songwriter Durand Bernarr suggested that Lewis could play Granddad’s sister.

“Picture it,” he wrote, “Grandad passes away in the opening of the 5th season and the boys are sent to live with Grandad’s sister: played by Jenifer Lewis ‘Mary Louise’ or ‘Ruby Ann.’ She’s the ONLY one I can think to keep that same energy. We don’t need another man to replace shoes that can’t be filled…but perhaps a woman that can take the [reins] and continue the race.”

The idea became an immediate hit, and after receiving tons of messages from fans putting forth Bernarr’s idea, Lewis responded, writing on Instagram, “Thank you one and all. I’ll check into this. It would be fun. I miss my John Witherspoon. He gave so much love and laughter y’all.”

The continuation of The Boondocks is set to air on HBO’s streaming service HBO Max in 2020.
