Netflix announced today that Jennifer Hudson will star opposite Adam Sandler in the Netflix original film “Sandy Wexler,” which will be Sandler’s third feature film under the current multi-picture deal he has with the streaming service – all of which have only been released on Netflix, bypassing theaters entirely.
Hudson will play the female lead in what has been classified as a romantic comedy.
The film follows Sandy Wexler (Adam Sandler), a talent manager working in Los Angeles in the 1990s, who diligently represents a group of eccentric clients on the fringes of show business. His single-minded devotion is put to the test when he falls in love with his newest client, Courtney Clarke (Jennifer Hudson), a tremendously talented singer who he discovers at an amusement park.
“Sandy Wexler” reunites Sandler’s Happy Madison Productions company with director Steve Brill (“The Do-Over”).
Paul Sado, Dan Bulla and Sandler wrote the script.
“Sandy Wexler” is scheduled to begin filming in Los Angeles on August 2. The film will premiere in all Netflix territories in 2017.
Happy Madison Productions’ Adam Sandler and Allen Covert will serve as Producers. Barry Bernardi and Tim Herlihy will serve as Executive Producers.
Jennifer Hudson was most recently seen on Broadway in the “Color Purple” musical. On the screen, she appeared in Spike Lee’s last feature film, “Chi-Raq,” and will next be seen on the small screen in NBC’s “Hairspray Live!” musical event, co-directed by Kenny Leon. It’s due this December.
