Jeremy Pope and Gabrielle Union will headline drama The Inspection from A24 and Gamechanger Films.

Filmmaker/photographer Elegance Bratton will make his feature film directorial debut from a script he wrote based on his life.

The film will follow a young gay man who joins the Marines as he fights to win his mother’s approval. Pope will play the young man, and Union will play his mother. A24 will co-finance the film and cover worldwide distribution, while Gamechanger’s Effie T. Brown and Freedom Principle’s Chester Algernal Gordon will produce. Brown will also co-finance. Production will begin this summer.

Bratton has recently wowed audiences with his documentary Pier Kids, highlighting Black queer and trans homeless kids who live on New York City’s Christopher Street Pier. Brown spoke about Bratton’s work in a statement.

Pope’s most recent role was as aspiring film writer Archie Coleman in Netflix series Hollywood. He is currently set to star as Sammy Davis Jr. in Janet Mock’s directorial debut film, Scandalous. He has also starred in the final season of Pose.

Union is currently working on a Cheaper by the Dozen reboot produced by Kenya Barris and rom-com The Perfect Find, also starring Niecy Nash and Keith Powers. Union has also finished filming a television movie called White Dave. The David E. Talbert-written comedy focuses on a Black teenage boy who moves from a white neighborhood to a Black neighborhood after his mother (Union) remarries.
