Kelvin Harrison Jr. is joining Baz Lurhmann’s untitled Elvis Presley feature film as blues legend B.B. King.

B.B. King was coined “The King of Blues” thanks to his popularizing blues to a mainstream level. Harrison joins Americana musician Yola, who will portray rock and roll pioneer Sister Rosetta Tharpe.

The film will star Austin Butler as Elvis Presley and Tom Hanks as Colonel Tom Parker, Presley’s manager and focus on Presley and Parker’s relationship across 20 years. According to Deadline, the film will follow “Presley’s rise to fame to his unprecedented stardom, against the backdrop of the evolving cultural landscape and loss of innocence in America.” Olivia DeJonge is also set to star as Priscilla Presley.

Lurhmann and Craig Pearce have written the script, with Lurhmann directing. Lurhmann is also producing with Andrew Mittman as executive producer. Catherine Martin, Patrick McCormick, Schuyler Weiss and Gail Berman are also producing.

Harrison, acclaimed for his riveting turns in the indies Luce and Waves, will soon be seen in Euphoria season 2 and Netflix’s Monster. 

There is a B.B. King biopic that is in the works from his estate and Wendell Pierce is also set to play him in a film.
