Not only did Kemiyondo Coutinho rack up numerous festival awards for her short film Kyenvu, but the project is also now the first Ugandan film to be on Hulu.
The first Ugandan film to be on Hulu. I am so proud of this baby. Mostly because I will continue to boast about our 100 percent Ugandan cast and crew.
There is a story when the film with our own and by our own has gone this far. https://t.co/enOCWtTBU7

Writing for Shadow and Act about the film, Aramide Tinubu said, “Winner of the Pan African Film Festival’s Grand Jury Best Short Film Award and a finalist in NBCU Short Film Festival 2018, Kyenvu is a raw and breathless account of a fearless Ugandan woman’s determination to assert herself in a world where she’s constantly being preyed upon. Coutinho stars in the film as the young woman who encounters street harassment daily. When the woman finally lets her guard down, she’s attacked in the worst possible way.”
On the continued relevance of the film’s subject matter, Countinho told us, “Being an ally means getting uncomfortable. If you want to see change, we’ve got to get uncomfortable — all of us. Feminism is not just for women. This fight is not just about women. Men need to speak up. In fact, I think that’s who really needs to speak up.”
The filmmaker is a recipient of Shadow and Act’s RISING Awards, which will be held on Friday, February 22.
