Lashana Lynch has been tapped to star in TriStar’s The Woman King. She joins the previously-announced Voila Davis and The Underground Railroad‘s Thuso Mbedu. Gina Prince-Bythewood is the director. Dana Stevens wrote the original screenplay and did a rewrite with Prince-Bythewood.

As we reported back in 2018, the film is inspired by true events in the Kingdom of Dahomey, a powerful state in the 18th century. It will tell the story of Nanisca (Davis), general of the all-female military unit known as the Amazons, and her daughter Nawi (Mbedu), who together fought the French and neighboring tribes who violated their honor, enslaved their people, and threatened to destroy everything they’ve lived for.

lThe Hollywood Reporter states that Lynch will play “a charming veteran warrior.”

“Lashana is next-level dope,” said Prince-Bythewood in a statement. “Not just her incredible chops, but who she projects to the world.  She embodies these true-life warriors and we are so lucky she is coming to play.”

She’ll be seen soon in the Bond film No Time to Die and is in production on TriStar and Netflix’s Matilda
