Relative newcomer Laura Harrier has booked a co-starring role opposite Michael B. Jordan in HBO’s adaptation of author Ray Bradbury’s 1953 classic, “Fahrenheit 451.”
Michael Shannon, Soufia Boutella and Lily Singh are also attached to the project, which depicts a future where media is an opiate, history is outlawed, and “firemen” burn books. Guy Montag (Jordan), a 30 year old fireman who becomes increasingly discontent as he realizes he has been living an empty, unfulfilling life, forsakes his world, battles his mentor (Shannon), and struggles to regain his humanity.
Harrier has signed up to play Millie Montag, Guy’s wife of ten years who, in the source material, is shallow and complacent of society, which her husband comes to despise. Millie immerses herself in the technological gadgets of the age, which allow her a constant escape from reality. There’s more to her story, but I won’t spoil it for those unfamiliar with the original story.
Though the film is still in development, HBO has made a production commitment.
Filmmaker Ramin Bahrani (“99 Homes”) will direct as well as co-write the adaptation along with Amir Naderi.
Jordan will also executive produce the project through his Outlier Productions.
The novel has been adapted several times over the years, most notably Francois Truffaut’s 1966 film.
Laura Harrier will next be seen as Tom Holland’s love interest Liz Allan in “Spider-Man: Homecoming” which opens July 7.
