Mahershala Ali, Julia Roberts, Ethan Hakwe and Myha’la realize they are in the midst of a global cyberattack in the upcoming Netflix film Leave the World Behind, executive produced via the Obamas’ Higher Ground Productions.

With script and direction by Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail, Leave the World Behind continues Esmail’s focus on the dangerous side of technology with a story about a couple who are enjoying vacation when they realize the world has changed for the worst. Ali plays a father who, with his daughter, played by Myha’la, tells the family what has happened in the outside world. The film is based on the upcoming novel by Rumaan Alam.

In this apocalyptic thriller from award-winning writer and director Sam Esmail (Mr. Robot), Amanda (Academy Award winner Julia Roberts) and her husband Clay (Academy Award nominee Ethan Hawke), rent a luxurious home for the weekend with their kids, Archie (Charlie Evans) and Rose (Farrah Mackenzie). Their vacation is soon upended when two strangers — G.H. (Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali) and his daughter Ruth (Myha’la) arrive in the night, bearing news of a mysterious cyberattack and seeking refuge in the house they claim is theirs. The two families reckon with a looming disaster that grows more terrifying by the minute, forcing everyone to come to terms with their places in a collapsing world.

Esmail produces via his company Esmail Corp with former President and First Lady Barack and Michelle Obama executive producing via their production company, Higher Ground Productions. Red Om Films also produces.
