The long-awaited Netflix film follow-up to popular BBC show Luther is finally on its way.
Netflix has announced Luther: The Fallen Sun, coming to Netflix March 2023. Directed by Jamie Payne and written by Neil Cross, the film continues the saga of John Luther as he tries to redeem his name and catch the villain that has slipped out of his grasp. According to the official description:
In Luther: The Fallen Sun, an epic continuation of the award-winning television saga reimagined for film, a gruesome serial killer is terrorizing London while brilliant but disgraced detective John Luther (Idris Elba) sits behind bars. Haunted by his failure to capture the cyber psychopath who now taunts him, Luther decides to break out of prison to finish the job by any means necessary.
Idris Elba reprises his role as John Luther and is joined by Cynthia Erivo, Andy Serkis, and Dermot Crowley, who also reprises his role as Martin Schenk.
The first look images show Elba in character and gives fans just enough of a hint as to the type of action and drama they will get once the film hits Netflix next year.
The upcoming debut of the film might feel like a miracle to Luther fans, who were told in 2020 by Elba that a film didn’t even seem like it would be in the cards.
“There isn’t a real format plan for Luther at the moment,” Elba said to Entertainment Weekly at the time. “I’ve made it very clear that I’d like to see Luther come back as a film. And I can tell you this, that we are this close to making a film of Luther.“
Before Elba’s update, rumors of a Luther film had been swirling for years. Finally, once March rolls around, fans will finally be able to see the film they’ve been waiting for.
