Even though we are in a pandemic, that is no excuse for local officials in Louisiana to start referencing The Purge, the film series depicting an America where all crime, including murder, is legal for one night each year.

According to Entertainment Weekly via KATC, the police department of Crowley, LA, played a siren to let citizens know the start of the city’s new curfew to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus. But the siren sounded too similar to the one from The Purge, and citizens let the officials have it on Facebook, with over 500 people asking why the siren was needed.

When interviewed by KATC, Crowley Police Chief Jimmy Broussard said he didn’t know the siren was from the film and that the department will not use the siren in the future.

Acadia Parish Sheriff K.P. Gibson also released a statement about the siren, saying, “Last night a ‘Purge Siren’ was utilized by the Crowley Police Department as part of their starting curfew. We have received numerous complaints with the belief that our agency was involved in this process. We were not involved in the use of the ‘Purge Siren’ and will not utilize any type of siren for this purpose.”

Let’s do what we can to flatten the curve, but we don’t have to scare everyone in the process.
