Despite high ratings, a groundswell of universal acclaim and a place in the pop culture zeitgeist, HBO announced last Friday that it had made the decision to not order a second season of Misha Green‘s Lovecraft Country. This raised many eyebrows and prompting many questions as to what spurred the decision.

In the wake of the news, Green took to Twitter to share her plans for what season 2 of the HBO pop culture touchstone would have looked like. In her Twitter post, Green showcased a map of “The Sovereign States of America.”
In Green’s own words, Season 2 of Lovecraft Country “begins in a new world, and that new world is a country that sits where The United States used to sit.” As depicted in the map, The Sovereign States Of America is divided into four different geographical zones: the New Negro Republic, the Jefferson Commonwealth, the Whitelands and the Tribal Nations of the West.

In a later tweet, Green posted what “The Whitelands” would have looked like to satiate the curiosity of Lovecraft Country fans.

“The Whitelands is a territory that is completely overrun by zombies — most of them of the slower variety, but with pockets of fast-moving zombies too,” she wrote. “One price of ‘The Origin’ spell was the creation of a zombie population. Years into the epidemic, a joint effort was undertaken to corral the zombies into one location in the center of America. The Whitelands now function as a dangerous border between the South, West and Northern territories. (X marks the spot where ‘The Source’ will appear.”
As we reported Friday, HBO said, “We will not be moving forward with a second season of Lovecraft Country. We are grateful for the dedication and artistry of the gifted cast and crew, and to Misha Green, who crafted this groundbreaking series. And to the fans, thank you for joining us on this journey.”
Though the first season was conceived as a single story, it is clear Green was willing to do a second season and Deadline’s Justin Kroll reported, “What’s wild about this is that every cast member from Jurnee to Majors (spoiler alert was expected to return Jon Snow style) had cleared time in schedule and was under impression second season was foregone conclusion.”
