UPDATE 3:15 p.m. ET–The news about Lando getting his own film isn’t true after all. Lucasfilm says a mistranslation between a journalist for French publication Premiere and Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy led to the error.
According to The Huffington Post, Premiere states, “Following the publication of our article Lucasfilm informs us that there would have been a misunderstanding between our journalist and Kathleen Kennedy. Her comment should have read, ‘We would love to tell a story about Lando Calrissian one day, but it’s not relevant.'”
It’s upsetting that this news isn’t real. But what’s equally upsetting is that Lando’s story is considered irrelevant. We’re still hoping to see him in his own big adventure one day.
Original story below:
For weeks, people have been saying the reason they’re even remotely interested in Solo: A Star Wars Story is because of Donald Glover’s turn as Lando Calrissian. Seems like Lucasfilm heard the Twittersphere, since they’ve confirmed the next original Star Wars character to lead a prequel film will be Lando himself.
Recently, we’d speculated if Glover was indeed signed on to do more Star Wars films since Alden Ehrenreich, who portrays a younger Han Solo, let it slip that his contract included appearances in future installments. While it’s still unclear how Glover’s contract was structured, Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy confirmed that Lando will get his own film, according to Comicbook.com, and it’s something Lucasfilm is excited to tackle soon.
“We think that the next spin-off will be dedicated to Lando Calrissian,” she said. “Of course, there will be many stories to tell about Han and Chewbacca but Lando will be next.”
Even though Solo has yet to come to theaters, early reviews already cite Lando as one of the highlights of the film. It only makes sense that with the early buzz and the groundswell of support on social media that a Lando film would be next on the list. Even though Star Wars should have already had black women and more black men as part of its film franchise, a Lando film would be a great opportunity to finally introduce audiences to a universe of black Star Wars film characters, characters that would hopefully show up again in films that are part of the main Star Wars storyline.
Solo: A Star Wars Story comes to theaters May 25.
