Another August Wilson adaptation is headed to the screen. At Netflix, Viola Davis and Chadwick Boseman will star in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. Denzel Washington (who starred with Davis in the film adaptation of Wilson’s Fences) is producing.
Glynn Turman, Colman Domingo and Michael Potts have also been cast. George C. Wolfe is the director and Ruben Santiago-Hudson will be adapting it for the big screen.
The logline: When Ma Rainey, the “Queen of the Blues,” makes a record in a studio in Chicago, 1927, tensions boil between her, her white agent and producer, and bandmates.
Production will begin next month in Pittsburgh. Both Davis and Boseman have releases coming up in theaters soon: Troop Zero for the former and 21 Bridges for the latter.
