Mack Wilds is excited his latest project, Netflix’s Really Love, is giving fans a new Black love story.
Wilds spoke with S&A Managing Editor Trey Mangum for Shadow and Act’s Opening Act podcast, and he talked about how Really Love fills a void left by Hollywood in the years since the classic Black romance films of the ’90s and early ’00s.
“We all grew up on the Love and Basketballs, the Brown Sugars, the Love Joneses, The Best Man, The Wood…We had those films to grow up on and for a very long time, we didn’t,” he said. “It just felt like we weren’t getting the funding to shoot those films anymore, or people would think they weren’t profitable or people wouldn’t go out to see them. So I thought it was very necessary to just jump [on the film].”
He also added how Really Love is part of a movement in Hollywood to showcase racial and cultural diversity in mainstream films, and shouted out the history-making Marvel film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, as proof of the industry’s change.
“Seeing how we’re starting to see more stories from all ethnic walks of life come more to the forefront. Even watching the new Marvel joint, Shang-Chi, there are so many different walks of life starting to get the light [shone] on them in an amazing way,” he said. “…I love how cinema is going in that direction.”
