Tidal and Sprint have teamed up to exclusively release a new film starring Mahershala Ali, Lupita Nyong’o, and Danny Glover titled “4:44.” It’s the project that has been teased across the web with mysterious ads, leading some to believe that it was the title of Jay-Z’s next album.
Well, it apparently isn’t that. Or is it?
We still don’t know much about the story that “4:44” tells. But a teaser released last night revealed the 3 actors starring in it, as well as an NC-17 rating, which means that this one isn’t for the kids. So expect either extreme violence or strong sexual content (or both).
The teaser doesn’t show much; black-and-white footage of Mahershala Ali working a punching bag in slow-mo, with Danny Glover watching. Nyong’o isn’t in the teaser.
We don’t even know how long the film is.
I should note that Sprint bought a 33% stake in Tidal in January of this year, with plans for exclusive content for subscribers. “4:44” is just the beginning.
Also worth pointing out, there’s a 2011 feature film titled “4:44 Last Day on Earth” which follows two lovers (played by Willem Dafoe and Shanyn Leigh) who immerse themselves in sex, art and other activities after they learn that the world will end by the next morning. One film likely doesn’t have anything to do with the other, or was inspired by the former, but we’ll see when the film eventually drops. And we don’t even know when that will be.
The 444 in the title has meaning – a sign of spiritual awakening for example, based on my research.
