A former incarcerated male inmate who was behind bars for 21 years has gained fame on TikTok by sharing his journey of getting acclimated back into society.

Many things have changed in America over the last two decades, especially when it comes to pricing, cell phones, technology, social media and the internet.

Michael Lacey, or @comrade_sinque as he’s known on TikTok, recently posted a video that now has 2 million views, sharing one of the things that confused him most since being released from prison.

The video starts with a stitch of a white male, who was in prison for 16 years, at Wendy’s, unsure of how to use a drink dispenser. The man says “Dr. Pepper” and then sits his cup in the drink machine in hopes that the soda will pour out.

Lacey then pops in to share that although his experience with technology wasn’t “that bad,” there was one thing that he was never informed about before leaving prison.

When he became a free man, it was important for him to obtain his driver’s license. But what he didn’t know was that there was something new he’d have to learn about driving: roundabouts.

Lacey shared a video about his experience, recapping when he first encountered one, and he added in his caption that when he went to prison in 1997 “roundabouts were not very common in Indianapolis.”

“After 21 years in prison, I didn’t struggle with technology that bad, but the one area where I did have a massive complication … and I heard nobody in prison talking about this,” he said. “When I went and got my license, the DMV did not warn me about this. One day I’m out driving and I run into a roundabout, and I didn’t know what the hell to do.”

He wasn’t alone because other users quickly shared their confusion as well.

“I had a panic attack the first time I came up on a roundabout,” one user commented.

“Most people don’t know what to do,” another added.

“I Hate roundabouts! I avoid them at all costs,” a third person agreed.

Most people are left confused because roundabouts are, reportedly, not very common in the United States.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the first modern roundabout in the U.S. was constructed in Nevada in the 1990s.
