Marvel’s upcoming New Warriors series will not air on Freeform as originally planned. THR first broke the news.

The half-hour, live-action comedy was picked up for a straight-to-series order in April, and was a part of Freeform’s new Marvel programming along with Cloak & Dagger.

The reasoning for Freeform and Marvel not continuing with it on the network is due to Freeform expanding its original programming from two to four nights and therefore not having room for it on the 2018 schedule. Marvel then asked to have the property re-shopped to other networks because they want it to air in 2018, possibly netting a two-season deal on another network.

“We are extremely excited about Marvel’s New Warriors and look forward to finding the perfect partner to launch the series with in 2018,” said Dan Buckley, president of Marvel Entertainment.

So, it looks like the MCU on Freeform will just be one series for now. With ABC not being a contender it seems, will it go to Hulu (joining Runaways, another YA series)? It could premiere on Disney’s new streaming service (where all of its movies will exist after being pulled from Netflix), but insiders tell THR that may be a longshot.

In the series, Jeremy Tardy has been cast as Dwayne Taylor, aka Night Thrasher, and Kate Comer has been cast as Deborah Fields aka Debrii.

Tardy recently co-starred in Netflix’s Dear White People as Kenyan student Rashid Bakr, while this will be Comer’s breakout role. She had a minor role in HBO’s The Comeback.

Dwayne Taylor aka Night Trasher made his first appearance in Marvel’s Thor comic in 1989. In the comics, he is the confident founder and original leader of the New Warriors. In the comics, he doesn’t have any superpowers but excels in martial arts and is aided by advanced body armor. In the series, he will be an entrepreneur with a popular YouTube channel and a “shameless self-promoter” who “deeply believes in justice.” He is afraid to real he comes from a rich family because he think’s he’ll lose street cred.

Deborah Fields aka Debrii, is a New Warriors member who is telekinetic. In the series, she will be confidently out as a lesbian, described as “proud, funny and quick witted.” She has no problems with telling you how she feels. She’s experienced loss in her personal life in attempts of being a hero.

Other cast members  Derek Theler (Baby Daddy) as Mr. Immortal, Calum Worthy (Austin & Ally) as Speedball, Matthew Moy (2 Broke Girls) as Microbe, and in the role of Squirrel Girl for the character’s highly-anticipated live-action debut, Milana Vayntrub (This is Us).
