When you
come right down to it, what we deal with every day here on S&A is black imagery
in the media, whether it’s in films, television or even the internet. It’s the eternal burning issue, and when you consider that Iyanla Vanzant, on her OWN show this weekend, "Iyanla: Fix My Life," will feature a guy who’s fathered some 34 children by 17 different
women, and seems unrepentant about it, maybe it’s time for another alternative
image.
So I present
to you, young master Marques Brownlee, a 20 year old senior at Stevens College
in Hoboken, New Jersey, who was recently called by Google VP Vic Gundotra, without question, “the best technology reviewer on the planet right now.”
In case you haven’t
heard about him, he’s something of a YouTube sensation with his own channel – “MKBHD” – which has
more than 1.5 million subscribers, and has already gotten nearly 130 million total
views from his over 640 videos (HERE).
But the self
acknowledged techno-geek is no overnight sensation, having started posting his reviews
of the latest technological inventions for the past five years, since he was 15
years old. And no doubt, his love for all sorts of new gadgets and new fads, he
got from his father, who works in information systems and programming.
Take a look at one of his latest videos below, in which he reviewed those crummy Beats headphones (I already have Audio Technica and Sennheiser headphones), which has already gotten over 1.5 million views. As you
will see, he’s smart, savvy, incredibly knowledgeable, not only about the product, but the business aspects as well, has a
great presence on camera, and, with a wonderful sense of humor. In other words, he’s a
total pro.
You would
think that some network like CNN would snap him up in a heartbeat, to host his
own show, or better yet how about BET or OWN?
What am I saying? They would rather have guys who have fathered 34
children. He’s much better off where he is with his own Youtube channel and his
millions of viewers, don’t you agree?
