The CW’s “Riverdale” is an upcoming subversive live-action TV series based on the Archie comic book franchise.
In it, Ashleigh Murray plays talented musician Josie McCoy, who is described as “a gorgeous, snooty and ambitious girl who is the lead singer for popular band Josie and the Pussycats. She has zero interest in recording any songs written by fellow teen Archie.” This could be Murray’s breakout role, should the series be a hit, because she’s relatively new to the biz, with just a couple of short films, and appearing an episode of “The Following” on her resume. She also co-stars in an indie drama titled “Deidra & Laney Rob a Train” which is making its world premiere at the ongoing Sundance Film Festival (watch a trailer here).
Also cast in the series is Robin Givens as Riverdale’s Mayor Sierra McCoy in the Greg Berlanti-produced series. Mayor McCoy also happens to be Josie McCoy’s (Ashleigh Murray’s) mother in the series, and she’s described as powerful and fabulous, chic and driven, working hard to keep Riverdale in check, following a mysterious death, as the town’s upcoming 75th Jubilee Celebration draws near.
The drama series has been described as a subversive take on the classic Archie mythos.
The entire cast of characters from the comic books will make their way to the TV series, which is written by Archie Comics Chief Creative Officer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and co-produced by Warner Brothers Studios.
The series premiere of “Riverdale” is this Thursday at 9/8c on The CW.
