On Wednesday, reports surfaced that Sony was in talks with Chris Hemsworth to star in the upcoming spinoff for Men in Black.
The untitled film which Sony is targeting it May 17, 2019, is directed by F. Gary Gray.
THR, who exclusively broke the news, said that a diverse ensemble cast was being set for the film, led by a white male (which would be Hemsworth), a black woman and an older man. After THR’s initial report, they changed the wording from “black woman” to “a female of color.”
Both Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones are expected not to reprise their roles in the “contemporary sci-fi pic about the black-clad secret force that protects earth from the alien scum of the universe, focusing on new characters chasing villains that put the picture on more of a global scale than the two previous films.” The spinoff film is being produced by Walter F. Parkes and Laurie MacDonald and Steven Spielberg is executive producer. Matt Holloway and Art Marcum are the writers.
This project initially came as surprise, at it was anticipated that the next MIB film would be a mash-up with Sony’s 21 Jump Street franchise. This spinoff is being fast-tracked ahead of that project, which is probably dead.
