Michael B. Jordan has been working in Hollywood for over 20 years. He rose to fame in the acclaimed HBO drama series, The Wire and from there has gone on to star in everything from the Creed franchise to Black Panther. With so many credits under his belt, it’s shocking to think of the Without Remorse star bombing any audition. But apparently, that’s just what happened when Jordan went in to audition for 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

To make matters worse for the 34-year-old, director J.J. Abrams was there to see his audition flop. “I think it was I couldn’t wrap my brain around some of the sides because you know when you’re reading for these high-level projects, there’s never really any specificity in the sides,” he told Just for Variety podcast.

Because actors who audition for massive projects for studios like Disney and Marvel never know quite what they’re going into, it can be extremely challenging to prepare. “Everything’s like super vague; everything is in secret. Reading through, I just couldn’t connect it. I definitely bombed that one for sure,” Jordan added.

John Boyega who was cast in The Force Awakens as Finn also described a harrowing audition experience. “I was unleashed into seven months of auditions,” he told GQ. “The X Factor but without the TV show around it. It was intense.” Spider-Man’s Tom Holland also spoke about barely being about to get through his Star Wars audition.

“I remember doing this scene with this lady, bless her, and she was just a drone,” Holland said to Backstage. “So I was doing all of this, like, ‘We gotta get back to the ship!’ And she was going, ‘Bleep, bloop bloop, bleep bloop.’ I just couldn’t stop laughing. I found it so funny. And I felt really bad, because she was trying really hard to be a convincing android or drone or whatever they’re called. Yeah, I obviously didn’t get the part. That wasn’t my best moment.”

Though Jordan never got a chance to be a part of the Star Wars universe, we think he faired pretty well. His latest film, Without Remorse, is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video. Jordan has several projects on his slate, including his directorial debut with Creed III.
