It’s only right that the leading Black-owned independent content platform is bringing the world Off Top, a modern rap video countdown show with a nostalgic twist, hosted by iconic Hip Hop and television and radio personality Big Tigger alongside legendary rapper and artist Rapsody. The pair will also be joined by media personality, DJ Nyla Symone who will provide the sounds for each episode.
“I think this show is going to be important in a couple of different ways,” said Big Tigger in an exclusive interview with Shadow & Act. “We’re bringing back the energy from the basement, but it’s not quite the basement. I wanted the energy to be more focused on about what the music was evolving into, where it’s going and how it got here.”
He also adds that there’s a performance element of the show that’s not necessarily the booth like it was in Rap City, but that it is a space that is “visually stunning.”
For Rapsody, this show is a chance for her to be a fan.
“It was an opportunity for me to get into a space to show that as a creative, I could also be a fan of the culture and the artists and really just be a fan of creativity,” she said. “It’s about me connecting with other creatives.”
REVOLT CEO Detavio Samuels explains the intentionality that went into selecting Big Tigger and Rapsody as the hosts.
“We wanted to create a must-stop destination for Hip Hop’s most talented emcees to prove why they deserve to be considered among the best lyricist in the game,” Samuels explained. “It was important that we paired an emcee who represents the best of the present and future with a cultural icon to show what the best of Hip Hop looks like.”
Rapsody says that the network founded by Hip Hop royalty, Sean “Diddy” Combs, couldn’t have been a better home for “Off Top.”
“I’ve always said that nobody can tell stories like us,” continued the “Afeni” emcee. “We create our own space and that’s what I love about REVOLT, it’s for us and it’s literally unbiased and for me, everything that comes from it feels authentic.”
Each episode of “Off Top” will feature top videos from today’s hottest rap artists and emerging talent. Artists like Young Dolph, Latto, G Herbo, Key Glock, and more will also get the chance to showcase their skills through freestyles and fans can get to know them on a more personal level through exclusive interviews.
“This show is going to accomplish a lot on a bunch of different levels,” Big Tigger concluded. “I’m impressed, I’m happy, and I know that the fans are going to love it. This will give you an opportunity for these artists to truly introduce themselves to you.”
Off Top premieres on REVOLT’s linear channel this Friday, July 23 at 9 p.m. ET with new episodes airing each and every Friday.
