Nanny writer/director Nikyatu Jusu is going to the realm of the zombies with MGM’s Night of the Living Dead sequel.

Deadline reports that MGM is in final negotiations to gain the worldwide rights to the sequel. Jusu will direct. The battle for worldwide rights has been described as a “highly competitive situation.”

LaToya Morgan (The Walking Dead) has written the script, meaning this sequel will be benefitting from the viewpoint of a Black women in the screenwriting department and behind the camera. The film will be released in theaters via MGM and will be produced by Village Roadshow Pictures, Vertigo Entertainment, Westbrook, Origin Story and Sanibel Films, the production company created by the man behind Night of the Living Dead, George A. Romero.

The original Night of the Living Dead brought audiences the horror of zombies to a mainstream audience, instantly making Romero an icon in film. Created in 1968, the film included racial discussions into its horror with Duane Jones as the film’s lead.

Jusu’s current work, Nanny, is available on Prime Video and follows Aisha (Anna Diop), a Senegalese woman who moves to New York to create a better life for her son, but the longer she stays, the more she becomes haunted by the fact that she had to leave her child behind.

“I have so much reverence for my mother, Anna [Diop’s] mother, the mothers in our community, you know, as Black people, I think that women uphold the community, and a lot of times they don’t get the laurels or the flowers in real time that they deserve,” said Jusu said to Shadow and Act. “The intuition and the ability to be strong at times of struggle, but not celebrate that struggle, giving this lead character tenderness and love and nurturing was really important to me as well.”
