The peacock network has made its third series order of the season. Following Jimmy Smits legal drama Bluff City Law and the Kal Penn, immigrant-led drama, Sunnyside, the drama series Council of Dads has been ordered at NBC.

The series, based on the book, The Council of Dads: My Daughters, My Illness, and the Men Who Could Be Me, was actually in development at Fox as a comedy a few years back. The newly-developed, more dramatic take on the series could be a pair for This is Us. The Village, which was a buzzy new series order for NBC last year, hasn’t exactly been a ratings breakout and is on the bubble.
It will star Sarah Wayne Callies, Clive Standen, Tom Everett Scott, J. August Richards (Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), Blue Chapman, Emjay Anthony, Michele Weaver (Love Is __), Thalia Tran, Steven Silver (13 Reasons Why) and Michael O’Neill.
Richards has appeared in and directed episodes of S&A Rising Award winner James Bland‘s Giants.
The description of Council of Dads: When Scott, a loving father of four, has his entire life’s plan thrown into upheaval by a cancer diagnosis, he calls on a few of his closest allies to step in as back-up dads for every stage of his growing family’s life. Scott assembles a trusted group of role models that includes Anthony, his oldest friend; Larry, his AA sponsor; and Oliver, his surgeon and best friend to his wife, Robin. These men agree to devote themselves to supporting and guiding Scott’s amazing family through all the triumphs and challenges life has to offer, just in case he ever can’t be there to do so himself.
The Universal Television series is written and executive produced by Tony Phelan and Joan Rater. Jerry Bruckheimer, Jonathan Littman and KristieAnne Reed will also executive produce. James Oh and Bruce Feiler are producers.
