Netflix is no slouch when it comes to introducing diverse content to new audiences. Whether it be the acclaimed Bong Joon-ho-directed flick Okja or the Ava DuVernay-directed documentary The 13th, the streaming service seems to be always ahead of the curve when it comes to pushing the needle forward for representation of marginalized communities in both film and television. Delivering on that premise comes Siempre Bruja, the streaming service’s second announced Colombian original.

Netflix began principal photography on the announced drama Monday, May 21. The 10-episode series will be available to Netflix members around the world in 2019. Produced by Dago García and Juliana Barrera, Siempre Bruja chronicles the adventures of 18-year old Carmen, a Colombian slave and witch from the 17th century who travels in time to present-day Cartegena to save her loved ones. The series stars Angely Gaviria, Valeria Emiliani, Sofia Araujo, Youtuber Dylan Fuentes and newcomers Carlos Quintero, Duban Prado and Lenard Vanderaa. The young adult drama will be written by Ana Maria Parra and Diego Vivanco and directed by Liliana Bocanegra and Mateo Stivelberg.

Siempre Bruja joins a larger slate of original productions being filmed in Latin America, including Narcos and the acclaimed dystopian thriller 3%.
