“Orange Is the New Black” – NETFLIX

The upcoming 5th season of Netflix’s award-winning hit series “Orange Is the New Black,” created by Jenji Kohan and produced by Tilted Productions in association with Lionsgate Television, will premiere on June 9, 2017.

Based on Piper Kerman’s memoir, “Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women’s Prison” (2010), about her experiences at FCI Danbury, a minimum-security federal prison, “Orange Is the New Black” was renewed for a fifth, sixth, and seventh season a year ago. Becoming Netflix’s most-watched original series, for its first season, the series garnered 12 Primetime Emmy Award nominations, including Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series, and Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series, winning three. A new Emmy rule in 2015 forced the series to change categories from comedy to drama. For its second season, the series received four Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series, and cast member Uzo Aduba won for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.

“Orange Is the New Black” is the first series to score Emmy nominations in both comedy and drama categories. The series has also received six Golden Globe Award nominations, six Writers Guild of America Award nominations, two Producers Guild of America Awards, an American Film Institute award, and a Peabody Award.

Plot details for the fifth season have been kept under wraps, although we learned that it will have a radically condensed timeframe, taking place over just three days. Danielle Brooks, who plays Taystee, confirmed the news to E! at the SAG Awards last month, stating, “Season 5 is done over the course of three days: you will watch 13 episodes, and find out what happens in the course of three days. So, it will be very detailed, very intense, and you better get ready.”

Returning cast includes Taylor Schilling, Uzo Aduba, Laura Prepon, Kate Mulgrew, Danielle Brooks, Adrienne C. Moore, Jackie Cruz, Laverne Cox, Lea DeLaria and Natasha Lyonne.

Netflix released a set of new images as well as the first minute from the first episode of the upcoming 5th season; in it, a riot sparked by Poussey’s death quickly escalates when the inmates gain control of the prison. Once they get a taste of power, chaos erupts in the halls of Litchfield. The unprecedented season will take place in real time and over the course of just three days.
