In a somewhat surprise announcement during Super Bowl LII, Netflix announced The Cloverfield Paradox, and that it would debut Sunday night.
Foregoing a traditional release, this is a first-of-its-kind release for a streaming platform, announcing a film a few hours before it premieres.
This could totally change the game for the film (previously titled God Particle), which has been pushed back and forth numerous times since it was first announced at Paramount.
However, we expected the often delays meant something was up with the film. So as expected, critical reviews have not been kind.
The initial story as we knew it followed an American space station crew that’s abandoned after a problem with a Hadron accelerator causes Earth to completely vanish, challenging all they know about the fabric of reality, as they desperately fight for their survival.
The film’s release was set for April 20 through Paramount after being pushed back several times. Netflix reported recently to be in talks to pick up the rights.
Coming from a black director, Julius Onah, the film, stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw and David Oyelowo.
Joining Oyelowo and Mbatha-Raw are Daniel Bruhl, Elizabeth Debicki, Chris O’Dowd, John Ortiz, Zhang Ziyi and Aksel Hennie.
