Last month, Netflix announced a “Sense8” Christmas special, as well as confirmed the date for season 2’s premiere.
Titled “Sense8: A Christmas Special,” the one-off 2-hour event launches globally today, Friday, December 23, only on Netflix.
Logline: The journey continues as these eight singular hearts and minds weave in and out of each other’s lives finding deeper connections, learning darker, more desperate secrets about one another and struggling to identify with more than just oneself.
It’s essentially episode 1 of season 2 for which Netflix has set a Friday, May 5 premiere date, when a second 10-episode season will begin streaming on the premier SVOD platform.
Picking up where season one left off, Capheus (Toby Onwumere), Kala (Tina Desai), Lito (Miguel Angel Silvestre), Nomi (Jamie Clayton), Riley (Tuppence Middleton) , Sun (Donna Bae), Will (Brian J. Wright) and Wolfgang (Max Riemelt) come together both physically and mentally, plunged into the middle of each other’s tragedies and triumphs. On the run from Whispers (Terrence Mann), and forced to question their very identity, it’s a matter of survival as the Sensates must find a way to live with, understand and protect one another against all odds.
Of note the Capheus character – one of the main characters on “Sense8,” a young Kenyan man living in Nairobi – who was played by British actor Aml Ameen in season 1, will be played by recent UC San Diego MFA acting graduate Toby Onwumere. Capheus is one of eight strangers around the word suddenly linked mentally and emotionally who are at the center of the sci-fi series.
Also, Freema Agyeman returns for the Christmas special and for season 2.
Season 1, which I really struggled to get through (although I will revisit it before season 2 launches), also featured an international ensemble cast that included Naveen Andrews, Daryl Hannah, Brian J. Smith, Tuppence Middleton, Aml Ameen, Freema Agyeman, Tena Desae, Doona Bae, Max Riemelt, Alfonso Herrera, Erendira Ibarra, Jamie Clayton, Miguel Silvestre and Terrence Mann.
The sprawling production spanned 9 locations on 4 continents – Chicago, San Francisco, London, Iceland, Seoul, Mumbai, Berlin, Mexico City and Nairobi.
Lana Wachowski, Grant Hill and J. Michael Straczynski serve as Executive Producers on the series.
