It’s another day, and there is another Law & Order spinoff on the horizon..but this new one isn’t going to focus on the police. Dick Wolf is expanding his massive Law & Order franchise yet again. This time, he is teaming up with, CSI: Miami creator Carol Mendelsohn. NBC has given the team’s latest legal drama Law & Order: For the Defense, a straight-to-series order.
For the Defense is set to give fans of the franchise another perspective of the legal system from inside a criminal defense firm. The series will place the lawyers in the firm under the microscope. It will also examine the criminal justice system, with every week delivering the promise of a contemporary morality tale.
This new show is exciting for me personally,” Wolf said in a statement to Deadline. “We spent the last 30 years on shows that played offense. Now it will be great to play defense, and being able to do it with Carol is an honor and an opportunity for both of us to do television that hasn’t been done before.”
Lisa Katz, President, Scripted Programming, NBCUniversal Television, and Streaming said in the press release announcing the new series,
We can’t wait to bring audiences the latest chapter of Law & Order, which will explore a different angle of the criminal justice system. We’re excited about Dick Wolf’s perpetually thought-provoking approach as well his collaboration with Carol Mendelsohn, who we have been eager to do a series with for a long time.
Mendelsohn will serve as showrunner. She is executive producing with Wolf, Arthur Forney, Julie Weitz, and Peter Jankowski.
Law & Order: For the Defense follows the success and return of Christopher Meloni as Elliot Stabler to Law & Order: Organized Crime. NBC has also been looking to do another offshoot, Law & Order: Hate Crimes, for several years, and given the climate, we’d say they have no shortage of material to work with.
