The trailer for Oscilloscope Laboratories’ inventive drama about self-discovery, Madeline’s Madeline, will hit you right in the gut with its trippy visuals, setting the tone for what appears to be one of the most exciting films to come out this year.

The film has already had wild praise from critics, including IndieWire’s David Ehrlich, who called the film “one of the boldest and most invigorating films of the 21st century,” and Birth.Movies.Death’s Jeremy Smith, who said, “Madeline’s Madeline is a must for anyone who cares about the future of this medium.”

The film stars newcomer Helena Howard as Madeline, a performer in a prestigious physical theater troupe. “When the workshop’s ambitious director (Molly Parker) pushes the teenager to weave her rich interior world and troubled history with her mother (Miranda July) into their collective art, the lines between performance and reality begin to blur. The resulting battle between imagination and appropriation rips out of the rehearsal space and through all three women’s lives.” Howard is described as giving a “virtuoso performance” with “powerful screen presence [that] commands attention.”

Madeline’s Madeline comes to theaters August 10.
