Despite #NoConfederate becoming the #1 trending topic nationwide on Twitter Sunday night, HBO has responded to criticism of its upcoming series Confederate, and wants people to “reserve judgment.”

According to its official description, the series “chronicles the events leading to the Third American Civil War. The series takes place in an alternate timeline, where the southern states have successfully seceded from the Union, giving rise to a nation in which slavery remains legal and has evolved into a modern institution. The story follows a broad swath of characters on both sides of the Mason-Dixon Demilitarized Zone — freedom fighters, slave hunters, politicians, abolitionists, journalists, the executives of a slave-holding conglomerate and the families of people in their thrall.”

Per usual, black women led the charge in seeking to thwart HBO and the showrunners’ efforts. Entertainment journalist ReBecca Theodore-Vachon, #OscarsSoWhite creator April Reign, filmmaker Lauren Warren, “social justice warlord” Shanelle Little and Black Girl Nerds founder Jamie Broadnax joined forces to stop HBO from airing the show with the hashtag, #NoConfederate.

In response, HBO released a statement. “We have great respect for the dialogue and concern being expressed around Confederate. We have faith that Nichelle, Dan, David and Malcolm will approach the subject with care and sensitivity. The project is currently in its infancy so we hope that people will reserve judgment until there is something to see.”

As far as HBO will continue to make something happen with Confederate, we’re sure that the #NoConfederate campaign will continue to push back even further.
