Just two days after the Oscars awards show, what is perhaps the most acclaimed film of 2016 and so far in 2017, “Moonlight,” is set to come out on Blu-ray through Lionsgate Home Entertainment a month from now, Feb. 28.

Though “Moonlight” was one of the highest-grossing indie films released by a small distributor in 2016 (through 2017), it never reached much beyond the urban areas. Unlike Amazon/Roadshow Attraction’s “Manchester by the Sea” (which was the highest grossing indie film last year, and has earned nearly $40 million so far) and A24’s “The Witch” (which comes in second with $25 million), “Moonlight” never played in more than just over 1000 screens. As a result, it is still unseen by many people who have wanted to see it, but had zero, or very limited access to it during its limited theatrical run.

Even better is that the film, which has been rightfully praised for its evocative, luminous cinematography, will look wonderful on the blu-ray format.

Of course the disc will include several extra features, among which will be an audio commentary by director Barry Jenkins, an “Ensemble of Emotion: The Making of Moonlight” featurette, a “Poetry Through Collaboration: The Music of Moonlight” featurette, and finally a “Cruel Beauty: Filming in Miami” behind the scenes feature.
