During Sunday’s latest episode of Pose, “Take Me to Church,” fans were treated to a night of Black actress royalty with television legends Jackée Harry, Janet Hubert and Anna Maria Horsford playing Pray Tell’s (Billy Porter) family.
Pose co-creator/EP Steven Canals wrote on Twitter about casting the three actresses as Pray Tell’s family.
“When [writer/producer Janet Mock] and I discussed Pray Tell’s mama and aunties we KNEW we needed actors who are immediately recognizable and whose work is timeless,” he wrote, adding that the talk led to Horsford, Harry and Hubert being cast. “You’re welcome world,” he wrote.

As fans of the three actresses know, they are legends in the world of Black entertainment. Horsford is best known for her roles in television sitcoms Amen as Thelma Frye and The Wayans Bros. as Dee Baker. Horsford also played Mrs. Jones in the Friday film series. Hubert is best known as the original Aunt Viv on The Fresh Prince of Bel Air and recently made peace with Will Smith after a decades-long feud. However, despite being blackballed after leaving Fresh Prince, Hubert has continued to work throughout the years on TV series like The Job, The Bernie Mac Show, One Life to Live, If Loving You Is Wrong, King Ester and General Hospital, among others. Harry is best known for her roles as Sandra Clark on 227 and Lisa Landry on Sister, Sister, but she has also had roles on Amen, The Women of Brewster Place, The Royal Family, Everybody Hates Chris, Days of Our Lives and others.
“Words can’t describe how thrilled I am to have been included in the final season of [Pose],” wrote Harry on Twitter, thanking Mock and Canals for the role. “As a huge fan since day 1, to appear on-screen with this groundbreaking cast is truly a dream come true!”
“I’m honored to be a part of this powerful episode about faith, truth and acceptance,” wrote Horsford on Twitter, with Hubert also writing on Twitter, “Proud to be a part of this amazing show. Thank you Billy for believing in me, when no one else did to give me this incredible opportunity to play this role.”

Hubert also said to the New York Post, according to PopSugar, that she had a thoughtful exchange with Porter before production of the episode began.
“He said, ‘You all had a part of my life. You all had a part of my world, you were all part of my world going through all of what I’ve been through. You all held a spot in my life.’ And we were so touched,” she said. “…We were on a Zoom read, and we were crying because he was so sincere in saying, ‘You all held a place for me’ at a time where he needed something.”
