Legendary has won the film rights to the DC Comics/Vertigo title, Prince of Cats.
DC/Vertigo titles have been a hot commodity lately with Y: The Last Man pushing forward at FX and Melissa McCarthy, Tiffany Haddish and Elizabeth Moss in The Kitchen at Warner Bros.
The graphic novel is being adapted for film as a star vehicle for Lakeith Stanfield.
Selwyn Seyfu Hinds will adapt the title for film. He is also adapting Nnedi Okorafor’s Who Fears Death at HBO, exec produced by George R.R. Martin.
Prince of Cats is described as “an ‘80s hip-hop retelling of Shakespeare’s timeless classic Romeo & Juliet– only this time, we follow Tybalt’s perspective as he and his Capulet crew navigate a violent Brooklyn where underground sword dueling with the Montagues blossoms alongside a vibrant music scene.” The graphic novel was written by Ronald Wimberly.
Deadline first broke the news.
